Frequently Asked Questions

What is bibliotherapy coaching?

Bibliotherapy is using literature to support mental health.

Bibliotherapy coaching is me supporting you on an inner journey to use literature for self-help, self-empowerment, and healing. You are doing the work and the healing on your own, and I am acting as a coach, like a guide or cheerleader that can help point you in the right direction.

Is this therapy? Is this a replacement for therapy?

Bibliotherapy coaching is not psychotherapy and is not a replacement for psychotherapy.

There is no substitute for long-term psychotherapy with a trained professional, but bibliotherapy can be a great resource and supplement to work you are already doing, or a pre-cursor to deeper work.

What are your qualifications?

I have a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology and over a year of experience working as a traditional psychotherapist during my practicum as part of that program. I am currently waiting to receive my license number to become an official pre-licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, but am not yet working again as a therapist at this time.

I also have a deep, life-long love of learning, reading, and using bibliotherapy as a resource in my own inner work.

Currently, “bibliotherapist” is not a protected term in the same way that titles like "licensed marriage and family therapist" or "licensed personal clinical counselor" are in California or most other places. These protected titles usually require specific licensure and oversight by professional boards. However, I plan to continue my training in this realm throughout my associateship and beyond, which may include official recognition from the International Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy (stay tuned as I update about this process throughout my AMFT journey).

What services do you offer?

Currently I am only offering personalized book prescriptions that can be booked by emailing me directly at jessica@pathwaysinpages.com - I will update the services page as more offerings become available.

How are the books chosen for me?

Prior to receiving your prescription, you will fill out a form asking about your reading preferences, lifestyle issues, and any other notes you would like me to take into consideration. I will use this information (and our virtual consultation call, if chosen) to personalize your book prescription and send you a list of books.

The books are not included in the price of the service.

What if I don’t like a book that’s been prescribed?

Contact me at jessica@pathwaysinpages.com and we can discuss further.
